California rolls past Pitt-Johnstown

Vulcans post highest field-goal percentage of the year; Gilliard finishes with 29 points behind five treys

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 19) – Behind stifling defense and 20 points by senior Talia Gilliard in the first half, the California (PA) women's basketball team rolled to an 89-43 victory over Pitt-Johnstown at the Convocation Center on Wednesday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (15-10, 8-7) extended their winning streak to four games and have secured a berth in next month's PSAC Tournament.
• Cal has won seven of its last eight games at home dating back to Dec. 17.
• Gilliard scored 29 points on 12-of-18 shooting behind 5-of-10 from beyond the arc on Wednesday.
• She also added three assists and four steals while playing 36 minutes in the win.
• Gilliard has scored at least 20 points in four-consecutive games and six times in her last nine games.
• Fellow senior Allycia Harris registered a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds (six offensive), plus collected a team-high six assists and two steals.
• Classmate Iyahnna Williams finished with 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks against UPJ.
• Sophomore Kimaya Williams added 10 points and four rebounds, while classmate Alivia Huffman tallied six points and five rebounds in just 11 minutes off the bench.
• Cal held a 9-6 lead midway through the first quarter before holding UPJ scoreless for nearly 10 minutes, extending the lead to 34-6 with 5:30 left in the second quarter.
• The Vulcans later closed the first half on a 13-4 run to stretch the lead to 47-12 at the break.
• Cal shot at a 62.1 clip (18-of-29) in the first half while holding UPJ to only a .154 field-goal percentage (4-of-26).
• The Vulcans led by as many as 41 points, 69-28, in the third quarter at the 1:12-mark.
• Cal eventually led by over 50 points with 3:14 left to play before earning its second win this season by at least 45 points (Penn State-Beaver).
• The Vulcans finished the game with its best field-goal percentage of the year at a 57.4 mark (35-of-61).
• Cal was credited with its second-most assists of the season (24) and scored 32 points off turnovers.
• The Vulcans also totaled 52 points in the paint and posted 14 fast-break points.

NEXT
• Cal is idle this weekend before traveling to face IUP in PSAC West play on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 5:30 p.m.
• The Crimson Hawks have also clinched a berth in the league tournament.
• All six slots from the Western Division for the PSAC Tournament have been secured yet only the sixth seed (Clarion) has been determined with three dates of games left in the regular season.
