Vulcans fall in final minutes to No. 13 Gannon

Young leads team with 17 points; California drops fourth contest to nationally-ranked team this year

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 1) – The California (PA) women's basketball team held the lead for the overwhelming majority of the game on Saturday afternoon before suffering a 61-56 loss to No. 13 Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Convocation Center.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (11-10, 7-7) have lost the last five meetings at home versus the Golden Knights, including three by five points or less.
• Cal remains fifth in the divisional standings with six games left in the regular season.
• Gannon (20-3, 12-2) continues to sit a tie for second place in the PSAC West standings, one-game back of first place.
• Junior Alicia Young led the team in scoring with 17 points on 7-of-15 shooting.
• She also added five rebounds (four offensive) and three steals while playing 29 minutes.
• Senior Allycia Harris tallied eight points and a team-leading 10 rebounds (four offensive) in the loss.
• Classmate Talia Gilliard posted 12 points, five rebounds and four steals on Saturday, while fellow senior Iyahnna Williams finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
• The Vulcans posted an 11-2 run midway through the first quarter to build an 18-9 lead and held a 21-16 lead at the quarter break after scoring 14 points inside the paint.
• Both teams managed just four field-goals in the second quarter with Cal taking a 32-29 lead into halftime.
• The Vulcans maintained lead through most of the third quarter before the Golden Knights tied the score twice in the final three minutes.
• Gannon claimed a 49-48 lead midway through the fourth quarter before Cal responded with a 7-1 run to take a 55-50 advantage with 3:07 left to play.
• The Golden Knights closed the game on an 11-1 rally, as three different starters for the Vulcans fouled out over the final minutes.
• Cal finished the game with a .373 field-goal percentage (22-of-59) after going just 2-of-15 (13.3 percent) from long range.
• The Vulcans finished with 15 offensive rebounds and scored 20 second-chance points.

• Cal returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 5, when it faces league-leading and nationally-ranked Seton Hill at the Convocation Center, starting at 5:30 p.m.
