California downed by No. 15 Minnesota State

Mavericks led the country in scoring, steals last season; Young paced team with 19 points

ERIE, Pa. (Nov. 8) – Facing the top-scoring offense in the country from last year, the Vulcans dropped a 98-53 contest to preseason No. 15 Minnesota State at the Conference Commissioners Association (CCA) Division II Tip-Off Classic on Saturday evening.

NOTES
• California (0-2) has opened the year against a pair of opponents that both advanced to the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament and combined for 48 victories last season.
• The Mavericks were picked as the preseason favorite in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) after averaging 87.6 points per game last season.
• In addition to leading NCAA Division II in scoring offense, Minnesota State paced the country with 17.5 steals per game last year.
• Senior Alicia Young led the team with 19 points on 8-of-20 shooting.
• She also added seven rebounds and five steals while playing 26 minutes.
• Senior transfer Kennedy Bankett finished with 12 points, six rebounds and two steals.
• Sophomore Hope Hawkins tied for the team lead with seven rebounds despite being limited to 20 minutes due to foul trouble.
• Minnesota State scored the final nine point of the first quarter to claim an 18-8 lead.
• The Mavericks later mounted a 21-2 run in the second quarter to take a 41-12 advantage before holding a 52-19 lead at the break.
• Minnesota State led by as many as 40 points, 59-19, early in the third quarter and extended the lead to large as 45 points in the closing minutes.
• Cal finished the game shooting at 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the floor and converted 10-of-22 attempts (45.5 percent) from the free-throw line.
• The Mavericks held a 52-43 rebounding advantage behind 22 offensive rebounds and forced a staggering 45 turnovers.

• The Vulcans conclude play at the CCA Division II Tip-Off Class tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 9, when they face Ferris State (MI) in Erie, Pennsylvania at 2 p.m.
