NOTES
• California travels to Virginia Union in the opening round of the NCAA Playoffs on Saturday afternoon in Richmond. The Vulcans are returning to the post-season for a consecutive year, while the Panthers are back in the NCAA Playoffs for a fourth-straight season.
• The Vulcans scored four touchdowns in the second half last Saturday while closing the regular season with a 35-10 victory at Shippensburg. Cal limited Shippensburg to 226 yards of total offense with the lone touchdown for the Raiders coming in the final minute of play. Junior
Alexie Sangster, Jr. led the team with a career-high 16 tackles with 1.0 sack. Junior
Samuel Hobbs and senior
Josh Hough both added six stops and 1.0 TFL with Hough recording 1.0 sack and one fumble recovery.
• A former team captain with the Panthers,
Alvin Parker has posted a 59-19 record in eight years as head coach at his alma mater. He led VUU to back-to-back CIAA Championships over the previous two seasons before falling in the title game last weekend. Additionally, the Panthers advanced to the NCAA regional championship in 2024 for the first time in program history.
• Virginia Union has made the NCAA Playoffs for the fourth-consecutive year and the 13th time overall in program history. The Panthers appeared in the NCAA Playoffs six times in an eight-year span from 1979-86. VUU featured nine All-CIAA honorees, highlighted by running back
Curtis Allen being chosen CIAA Offensive Player of the Year He leads NCAA Division II in rushing yards per game, rushing touchdowns, scoring and all-purpose yards per game. Behind his play, the Panthers rank third in the country in rushing offense and sixth in scoring offense. VUU boasted a trio of offensive linemen on the All-CIAA Teams with junior
Mathias Nielsen collecting first-team laurels after being a second-team selection the previous two years. Junior quarterback
RJ Rosales has posted over 1,600 passing yards and accounted for 20 combined touchdowns (six rushing). Defensively, the Panthers sit second in the CIAA in both scoring defense and total defense. Junior linebacker
Ahmad Ross leads the team with 76 tackles and has tallied 7.0 TFL, 3.0 sacks and three forced fumbles. Junior defensive lineman
Kamari Federick was the team's lone All-CIAA defensive representative this fall after leading the team with 6.5 sacks and 8.5 TFL. On special teams, senior kicker
Brady Myers was tabbed the CIAA Special Teams Player of the Year. He ranks second in the league, behind only Allen, in scoring with 7.1 points per game on six field goals and 60 PAT attempts.
• This year marked multiple changes to the NCAA Playoffs. Last spring, NCAA Division II members voted to make football an automatic-qualification sport, replacing the earned-access model. The field for the 2025 NCAA Playoffs features 16 conferences eligible for automatic qualification and the overall field expanded to 32 teams, with the top seeds no longer receiving a first-round bye under the format.
• In addition to the new format, Super Region One was realigned for the 2025 season. The CIAA returned to the region after previously competing in Super Region Two, while the G-MAC shifted to Super Region Three. Cal previously faced CIAA members in the NCAA Playoffs in both 2009 and 2011.
• The Vulcans feature a group of four junior captains this season, including three-year starter and defensive back
Keith Charney. The quartet has combined to start 91 games in their careers with each starting at least 16 games. Charney leads the team with 27 starts, while wide receiver
D'Avay Johnson and offensive lineman
Jacob King pace the offense with 24 career starts.
• Cal placed a total of nine selections on the All-PSAC West Teams this week with seven players receiving the honors for the first time in their career. Sophomore
Deontae Williams earned the distinction of garnering accolades as both a return specialist and wide receiver. Junior defensive back
Keith Charney was tabbed to the All-PSAC West First-Team for the second time in his career.
• The Vulcans are making their ninth all-time appearance in the NCAA Playoffs, all since 2007. Cal holds an 11-8 all-time record in the NCAA Playoffs with a 3-2 mark in the first round and a 2-3 record in road games. The Vulcans have previously played a CIAA member in the NCAA Playoffs three times, including twice in 2011 when they defeated Elizabeth City State before falling at Winston-Salem State.
• Virginia Union senior
Curtis Allen enters as the leader in NCAA Division II with 2,281 rushing yards this fall. His total already ranks as the eighth-most all-time in NCAA Division II history and is the highest single-season mark since
Jaleel McLaughlin eclipsed 2,300 yards in both 2018 and 2019 while at Notre Dame (Ohio). Allen has rushed for at least 200 yards four times this year with his season low still standing at 108 yards.
• The PSAC boasts three selections to the 2025 NCAA Playoffs with two teams from the Western Division and one from the Eastern Division. The CIAA and NE-10 each placed a pair of teams in the post-season field, while the MEC featured only its automatic qualifier. The region will feature a new champion this year as reigning-regional champion Slippery Rock failed to qualify for the 2025 NCAA Playoffs.
• Sophomore
Deontae Williams has established himself as one of the nation's top return specialists in 2025. He ranks second in the country with 844 combined return yards while averaging 35.9 yards per kick return and 11.7 yards per punt return. Williams scored a touchdown on special teams in three-consecutive weeks and is the first player since 2016 with both a kickoff and punt return for a touchdown in the same year.
• Junior running back
Kendrick Agenor ranks sixth in the PSAC with 732 rushing yards despite not starting until Week 5. He has scored seven of his eight rushing touchdowns this year over the past three games. Agenor has eclipsed the century mark twice this fall while registering eight runs of at least 20 yards. The Florida native also sits third on the team with 26 receptions totaling 254 yards.
• The Vulcans enter the post-season tied for second in NCAA Division II with eight blocked kicks this fall. Cal blocked a combined seven kicks the previous two years over 23 games. The Vulcans last blocked at least eight kicks in a season during the 2017 campaign. Sophomore
Sedrick Vessah is tied for the national lead with four blocked kicks.
• This weekend marks the fourth contest for Cal this year against a team ranked in the AFCA top-25 poll. The Vulcans have won all three previous meetings against nationally-ranked opponents this fall, including two in the opening four weeks of the season. Cal has already faced seven teams with winning records in 2025 and its opponents own a combined .538 winning percentage (70-60).
• Junior defensive back
Alexie Sangster, Jr. set a career high with 16 tackles last week at Shippensburg and was chosen the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. In his first year as a full-time starter, he leads the team with 85 tackles to rank as the most by a defensive back since 2013. Sangster is also tied for third in the PSAC with four interceptions.
