Former Cal assistants meet in Super Bowl

CALIFORNIA (Feb. 5) – Former California (PA) assistant football coaches John Benton and Tony Dews will coach against each other on Sunday, Feb. 8, when the Seattle Seahawks face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Benton is completing his first season as the offensive line coach with the Seahawks, while Dews is finishing his first year with the Patriots as the running back coach.

Benton served as the offensive line coach at Cal from 1990-94 under head coaches Jeff Petrucci and Kevin Donley. During his time with the Vulcans, he was the position coach for current Cal head coach Gary Dunn.

Dews spent the 2002 season as the offensive line coach at Cal, which marked the first year under head coach John Luckhardt – the program's all-time winningest coach and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Benton has coached in the NFL for nearly two decades after starting with the St. Louis Rams (2004-05). He later spent eight years with the Houston Texans (2006-13) under head coach Gary Kubiak. Kubiak is the father of current Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who also worked with Benton on the coaching staff of the New Orleans Saints last season. Benton has also spent time on the coaching staffs of the Miami Dolphis (2014-15), Jacksonville Jaguars (2016), San Francisco 49ers (2017-20) and New York Jets (2021-22).

Dews reunited with New England head coach Mike Vrabel in 2025 after spending six seasons on Vrabel's staff with the Tennessee Titans from 2018-23. Last year, Dews served as the running backs coach for the New York Jets.

Two years ago, former Cal defensive back Erik Harris (2008-11) was a member of the practice squad for the San Francisco 49ers during Super LVIII. Former Cal wide receiver CJ Goodwin (2013) became the first Vulcan to play in the Super Bowl while with the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI. Goodwin recently completed his eighth year as a mainstay on special teams with the Dallas Cowboys.
