California completes weekend challenge sweep

Four starters combine for nearly 70 points against West Liberty; Williams posts 17 points, 18 rebounds

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (Nov. 15) – Led by a career-high 21 points by sophomore Trinity Balog and the first career double-double by junior Kimaya Williams, the California (PA) women's basketball team posted a 77-69 win at West Liberty at the MEC/PSAC Conference Challenge on Saturday evening.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (2-3) won both games this weekend as part of the conference challenge.
• Balog finished with 21 points on 5-of-13 from the floor and 11-of-14 from the free-throw line.
• Williams recorded a double-double with 17 points on 8-of-13 from the floor and 18 rebounds.
• She also added five assists while playing all 40 minutes.
• Junior transfer Jalasia Hull posted 17 points, three assists and three steals in her first start of the year.
• Sophomore Hope Hawkins tallied 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in the victory.
• The Vulcans mounted a 17-4 run midway through the first quarter to build a 24-12 lead at the 1:57-mark.
• Cal held a 26-14 lead at the end of the quarter after limiting West Liberty to just 3-of-16 shooting (18.8 percent).
• The Vulcans maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second quarter before taking a 44-29 lead at halftime.
• Cal held a 56-41 lead midway through the third quarter before West Liberty closed the quarter on a 12-1 rally to cut the deficit to 57-53.
• The Vulcans opened the fourth quarter on a 12-4 run to extend the lead to 69-57 with 7:09 left to play.
• West Liberty trimmed the deficit to six points with 90 seconds remaining before Cal sealed the victory at the free-throw line.
• Cal finished the game shooting 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the floor and went 22-of-39 (56.4 percent) from the free-throw line.
• The Vulcans held a plus-10 rebounding advantage (43-33) and scored 50 points in the paint.

• Cal returns to action with on Wednesday, Nov. 19, with its home opener against Fairmont State at 5 p.m.
• The Fighting Falcons were chosen the preseason favorite in the MEC poll and were slotted No. 16 in the preseason WBCA top-25 poll.
