Vulcans rally in five sets past Slippery Rock

Mercer, Weiseman set career highs in digs; California earns first league victory since Oct. 10

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 31) – The Vulcans snapped a five-match losing streak by rallying to earn a 3-2 victory (23-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-10, 15-10) over Slippery Rock on Friday evening at the Convocation Center in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

NOTES
• California (16-9, 3-6) claimed its first league win since Oct. 10 while snapping a six-match losing streak in the series with Slippery Rock.
• Freshman Olivia Weiseman registered her second kill/dig double-double of the week with 16 kills and a season-high 22 digs.
• Junior Sarah Stephenson totaled 14 kills and five blocks, while senior Elisa Rugiero finished with 10 kills.
• Sophomore Lindsey Scammell collected seven kills and seven blocks, and classmate Kasie Meek added seven kills in the victory.
• Sophomore Morgan Johnson and senior Adrianna Favata guided the offense with 28 and 22 assists, respectively.
• Senior Caroline Mercer established a career high with 33 digs over the five sets, while junior Kay Lindenfelser posted 12 digs.
• In the first set, Slippery Rock won eight of the final 10 points to secure a 25-23 victory.
• The Vulcans hit at a .319 clip in the second set while totaling 21 kills.
• Cal mounted a 10-3 run late before earning a 25-22 win.
• In the third set, the Vulcans rallied for eight-consecutive points early before The Rock countered by winning eight of the next nine to cut the deficit to 13-12.
• Slippery Rock closed the set by winning five of the final seven points to earn a 25-23 win.
• The Vulcans won four of the last five points in the fourth set to tie the match with a 25-20 victory, as The Rock committed 12 attacking errors in the set.
• Cal raced out to a 4-1 lead in the decisive fifth set before winning six-consecutive points to take a 12-6 lead.
• The Vulcans closed the match with a 15-10 victory, marking their second five-set win this year.

• The Vulcans continue weekend play tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 1, when they host Clarion at 6 p.m.
