CALIFORNIA (Jan. 29) – Behind a torrid first quarter, the Vulcans opened a three-game homestand against division leaders with a 77-63 victory over IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Convocation Center on Wednesday evening.
NOTES
• California (11-9, 7-6) ranks fifth in PSAC West standings following the opening round of divisional play.
• The Vulcans have won the last 12 home meetings in the series against the Crimson Hawks dating back to 2013-14 campaign.
• IUP (15-4, 10-3) sits fourth overall in the league standings yet is only two games behind the division leader.
• Senior
Iyahnna Williams led the team with 20 points and set a season high with seven assists while adding three steals and three rebounds in 40 minutes.
• Classmate
Talia Gilliard finished with 18 points and is averaging 17.0 points over the last seven games.
• Junior
Alicia Young collected 12 points, six rebounds and two steals on Wednesday.
• Senior
Allycia Harris tallied eight points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win.
• Fellow senior
Sierra Bermudez posted 11 points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals versus the Crimson Hawks.
• Sophomore
Kimaya Williams led the team with seven rebounds and added eight points off the bench.
• The Vulcans made their initial eight shots of the game to build a 20-11 lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter.
• Cal finished the quarter with a 26-17 advantage after going 11-of-15 from the floor (73.3 percent), including four-of-five from long range.
• The Vulcans built a double-digit lead early in the second quarter before the Crimson Hawks twice cut the deficit to three points.
• Cal led by a 40-32 margin at halftime with the teams combining for only 10 free-throws.
• The Vulcans posted an 11-2 run early in the third quarter to build their lead to 16 points, 52-36, at the 5:03-mark.
• Cal later led by as many as 21 points twice in the fourth quarter to earn its seventh win in the last nine games in the series overall.
• The Vulcans finished with their second-best shooting performance of the year at 51.9 percent (28-of-54).
• Cal scored 30 points off turnovers in the victory and collected 18 assists.
