California rolls past Clarion at home

Gilliard sets career high with 26 points; Vulcans score second-most points this season

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 15) – The California (PA) women's basketball team erupted for 35 points in the first quarter while rolling to an 85-74 win over Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Convocation Center on Wednesday evening.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (8-8, 5-5) last scored at least 30 points in a quarter on Dec. 18, 2021 against West Chester – a span of 94 games.
• Senior Talia Gilliard set a career high with 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including four-of-nine from long range.
• She added six rebounds and three steals while playing 30 minutes in the win.
• Classmate Iyahnna Williams registered a second-straight, 20-point game by scoring 22 points on 10-of-14 from the floor.
• Senior Sierra Bermudez posted 11 points on three-of-five from beyond the arc and junior Alicia Young finished with 10 points.
• Senior Allycia Harris and sophomore Alivia Huffman tied Gilliard for the team lead with six rebounds on Wednesday.
• Sophomore Nina Shaw tied a season high with seven assists in only 20 minutes against the Golden Eagles.
• Cal scored the initial 14 points of the game in just over three minutes and built a 32-4 lead in the final minute of the first quarter.
• The Vulcans shot 15-of-18 (83.3 percent) from the floor, including five-of-six from long range, in the opening quarter.
• Cal led by as many as 30 points in the second quarter before taking a 48-25 lead at halftime.
• The Vulcans scored 28 points in the third quarter versus the Golden Eagles before leading by as many as 31 points, 78-47, in the contest.
• Cal finished the game with a .459 field-goal percentage (34-of-74) while making a season-high nine three-pointers (9-of-19, 47.4 percent).
 • The Golden Eagles converted 32-of-39 free-throw attempts (82.1 percent) compared to 13 total attempts by the Vulcans.
• Cal forced 32 turnovers in the victory and scored 16 fastbreak points, including 10 in the first quarter.

• The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Jan. 18, when they travel to face Pitt-Johnstown in PSAC West play at 1 p.m.
