Baseball claims twinbill split at Gannon

Vulcans score six runs with two outs in the fifth in Game 1; Holmes records complete-game victory

ERIE, Pa. (April 7) – The California (PA) baseball team posted a doubleheader split at Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Sunday afternoon, earning a 9-3 win in Game 1 before falling by a 3-2 margin in Game 2.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The Vulcans move to 19-8 this season with an 8-4 mark in league play.
• Cal sits in a four-way tie for first place in the PSAC West standings following three weeks of divisional action.
• The Golden Knights stand at 5-20 overall behind a 3-9 record in conference action.
• Cal has split the road doubleheader in the series with Gannon five times in the last seven seasons.

GAME 1
STATS
• Junior left fielder Ryan Callahan posted three hits, two RBI and one run scored from the leadoff spot.
• Sophomore third baseman Conor Carney finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
• Freshman shortstop Caleb Collins tallied two hits, one RBI and two runs scored.
• Junior first baseman Payton Conte reached base three times (single, two hit by pitch) and registered a pair of RBI.
• Sophomore Nathan Holmes (3-1) earned a complete-game victory, allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits over 7.0 innings with six strikeouts.
ACTION
• The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI double by Callahan.
• Gannon countered in the bottom of the third with a three-run homer by second baseman Miguel Vega.
• Cal responded by scoring eight runs on six hits, two walks, three hit by pitches and one error in the fifth to take a 9-3 lead.
• The Vulcans scored two runs on a sacrifice fly with a throwing error on the play.
• With two outs in the inning, senior right fielder Colby Rockacy later drew a bases-loaded walk before Carney delivered a two-run single.
• Collins followed with an RBI single before Cal scored the final two runs of the inning on back-to-back hit by pitches with the bases loaded.
• Gannon starting pitcher Jaret Boyer (0-3) was saddled with the loss after surrendering seven runs (all earned) on eight hits and two walks in 4.2 innings.

• Conte reached base twice (hit by pitch, single) and scored one run.
• Callahan collected the team's lone extra-base hit (ground-rule double) and scored once.
• Sophomore Sam Georgiana (3-1) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits and four walks in 4.1 innings with five strikeouts.
ACTION
• Gannon took a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the first.
• The Vulcans tied the score in the second on a sacrifice fly before taking a 2-1 lead on another sacrifice fly in the fourth.
• Gannon countered with back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth inning before leaving the bases loaded, 3-2.
• Cal stranded both the game-tying run and the go-ahead run on base in the top of the seventh.
• Gannon starting pitcher Jake Boynar (2-1) earned the win after yielding two runs (both earned) on two hits and one walk over 5.0 innings.
