Vulcans swept in doubleheader at Gannon

Rose registers third homer in last four games; California plays second extra-inning game this spring

ERIE, Pa. (April 20) – The Vulcans dropped a twinbill at Gannon on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, suffering a 3-2 extra-inning loss in Game 1 before dropping a 9-1 run-rule contest in Game 2.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The California (PA) softball team falls to 17-16 this season with a 15-10 mark in conference action.
• The Golden Knights improve to 21-11 overall behind a 16-6 record in league play.
• The Vulcans sit third in the divisional standings with seven games left in the regular season.
• Gannon has won seven of the last 10 meetings in the series against Cal at home.

GAME 1
STATS
• Senior catcher Britney Wilson posted two hits and scored one run, while junior first baseman Kaitlyn Achtermeier collected a two-run single.
• Junior Caleigh Rister (10-7) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) in 7.2 innings pitched with six strikeouts.
ACTION
• Gannon took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI single.
• The Vulcans answered in the fourth with a two-run single by Achtermeier after the inning started with a hit by pitch and single with a throwing error.
• The Golden Knights stranded runners on the corners in the bottom of the fifth and the Vulcans left the bases loaded in the seventh.
• Gannon forced extra innings with a solo homer by right fielder Emma Smerick with two outs in the bottom half of the inning.
• The Golden Knights claimed the walk-off victory with a two-out double by left fielder Abbey Girman in the eighth.

GAME 2
STATS
• Junior left fielder Carlena Fiorilli collected two hits while batting leadoff for the first time this year and second time in her career.
• Senior pitcher Alyssa Rose belted her fourth homer of the spring, her third in the last four games.
• Rose (6-9) was dealt the loss after surrendering nine runs (all earned) on five hits and six walks in 4.0 innings.
ACTION
• The Golden Knights raced out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first behind a three-run homer by Girman with two outs.
• Rose led off the second inning with a solo homer before Gannon answered with five runs on three hits, two walks and one hit by pitch in the bottom half.

• Cal begins the final week of the regular season with a doubleheader at Edinboro on Monday, April 22, starting at 1 p.m.
