Vulcans fall in final minute at Kutztown

Bermudez scores season-high 17 points behind four treys; Cal makes just one field goal in third quarter

KUTZTOWN, Pa. (Dec. 21) – The California (PA) women's basketball team led by as many as 18 points before suffering a 54-49 loss in the final minute at Kutztown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action on Saturday afternoon.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (6-6, 3-3) enter the holiday break tied for sixth in the divisional standings.
• Senior Sierra Bermudez led the team with a season-high 17 points behind four-of-nine from long range while making her first start in a month.
• Freshman Hope Hawkins tallied 12 points and seven rebounds (six offensive) – both season highs – in 17 minutes off the bench.
• Sophomore Kimaya Williams finished with seven rebounds while playing a season-high 37 minutes.
• Cal limited Kutztown to only four points in the first quarter and built a 17-4 lead in the opening two minutes of the second quarter.
• The Vulcans later scored 11-unanswered points before the Golden Bears made back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to 29-16 at halftime.
• Kutztown opened the third quarter on a 12-0 run and held Cal without a field goal until the 2:22-mark.
• The teams were tied at 34-34 before combining for five lead changes in the fourth quarter.
• The Vulcans held a 49-47 lead with 51 seconds left before the Golden Bears scored the final seven points of the game, including five-of-six from the free-throw line.
• Cal finished the game shooting 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the floor and converted just 9-of-20 (45.0 percent) from the charity stripe.
• The Vulcans collected 17 offensive rebounds and scored 18 second-chance points in the contest.

NEXT
• Cal is idle for two weeks before opening PSAC West play against nationally-ranked Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 4 at 1 p.m.
