CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Nov. 8) – In a meeting of preseason top-15 teams, the No. 6 California (PA) men's basketball team posted a 112-103 double-overtime victory at No. 11 Charleston (WV) on Friday night at the tip-off challenge hosted by the Golden Eagles.
NOTES
• The Vulcans (1-0) have won their season-opener in each of the last four years.
• Cal scored its most points in a game since totaling 120 points against Penn State-Greater Allegheny on Nov. 20, 2007.
• The Vulcans played their first double-overtime contest since Dec. 21, 2019 (at Millersville).
• Senior forward
Keith Palek III registered a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds in 45 minutes.
• He shot 8-of-24 from the floor and went 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.
• Redshirt junior
Cam Polak set a career high with 27 points on 9-of-18 shooting, including four-of-nine from beyond the arc.
• Junior
Donald Whitehead, Jr. added 20 points, nine assists and three steals while playing all 50 minutes.
• Classmate
Bryson Lucas scored 16 points on 7-of-13 from the field and totaled eight rebounds, five assists and four steals in the victory.
• Freshman
Jordyn Buchanan finished with 14 points behind seven-of-eight from the free-throw line and five rebounds in his college debut.
• The Vulcans held a three-point lead toward the end of regulation before the Golden Eagles converted three free-throws in the final second, 81-81.
• Cal out-scored Charleston by an 18-9 margin in the second overtime on Friday.
• The Vulcans recorded 19 assists on 37 field-goals made in the victory.
• Cal converted a combined 12-of-13 attempts from the free-throw line in the overtime periods.
