Terrell posts fourth-straight, 20-point game; Vulcans win third-straight game in overtime

ERIE, Pa. (Jan. 27) – The California (PA) women's basketball team registered a third-consecutive win in overtime on Saturday afternoon, battling to a 66-63 victory at Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The Vulcans improve to 14-4 this season behind a 9-3 mark in league action.
• The Lakers have lost three of their last four games to fall to 12-6 overall with an 8-4 record in divisional play.
• Cal holds a 12-3 record in road games against Mercyhurst since the Lakers joined the PSAC despite being swept in the season series last year.

STATS
• Redshirt senior Dejah Terrell scored a game-high 24 points on 7-of-16 from the floor and 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.
• She has finished with at least 20 points in each of the last four games and is averaging 20.7 points per game in 2024 (seven games).
• Terrell also posted six rebounds (three offensive) in 33 minutes on Saturday.
• Freshman Nina Shaw tallied nine points, four rebounds, seven assists and six steals while playing 43 minutes.
• Classmate Kimaya Williams collected seven points and five rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench.
• Junior Sierra Bermudez added 11 points behind three-of-five from beyond the arc in her second start of the year.

GAME ACTION
• Mercyhurst raced out to an 11-2 lead in the opening four minutes of the contest.
• The Lakers later extended the lead to 17-4 at the 3:44-mark before taking a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
• Cal tied the score at 18-18 with 7:37 left in the second quarter.
• The Lakers snapped nearly a seven-minute drought without a field goal with 6:50 remaining before halftime.
• Mercyhurst mounted a 9-3 run to reclaim the lead by a 27-21 margin at the 3:54-mark.
• The Lakers held a 30-26 lead at the break after shooting 50 percent from the floor.
• Cal seized control of the contest midway through the third quarter by scoring 14-unasnwered points, including 10 points by Terrell, to take a 45-34 lead with 2:15 left.
• The Vulcans held a 48-36 lead after the third quarter while making 7-of-11 attempts from the floor.
• Mercyhurst countered with a 15-2 run to start the fourth quarter and reclaimed the lead by a 51-50 margin with 4:08 remaining in regulation.
• Cal took a 55-53 advantage on a three-pointer by Williams – her first of the year – with 1:55 left to play before Mercyhurst tied the score on a jumper with just 1.2 seconds remaining to force overtime.
• The Lakers converted four free-throws late in overtime to hold a 63-62 lead with 1:34 remaining.
• Terrell converted a three-point play with 37 seconds left to give Cal the final lead change of the game, 65-63.
• The Vulcans finished the game shooting at a 43.1 clip (22-of-51) from the floor and converted 18-of-26 attempts (69.2 percent) from the free-throw line.
• Cal held a 35-28 rebounding advantage and scored 30 points inside the paint.
• Mercyhurst sophomore Bailey Kuhns scored a team-high 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

NEXT
• The Vulcans return to action on Monday, Jan. 29, when they travel to face IUP at 5:30 p.m. Cal and IUP are currently tied for second in the PSAC West standings, one game ahead of Mercyhurst.
