California takes split on opening day in NY

Droneberger, Rugiero combine for 38 kills in two matches; Simon collects assist/dig double-double

AMHERST, N.Y. (Sept. 8) – The Vulcans posted a split during the opening day of the Wildcat Den Classic presented by Ellicott Hotels on Friday, earning a 3-0 victory against Davis & Elkins before suffering a 3-0 loss to host Daemen (N.Y.).

RECORDS/SERIES
• The California (PA) volleyball team moves to 4-1 this season after sweeping a trio of five-set matches last weekend.
• The Vulcans have already played teams from four different conferences this fall.
• D&E remains winless this year with a 0-5 record after posting 15 wins and a .500 record in MEC play last season.
• Daemen improves to 3-2 this fall while playing three different PSAC schools (Clarion, Shippensburg).

MATCH 1 NOTES: California d. Davis & Elkins, 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-15)
• The Vulcans recorded a season-best .333 hitting percentage with junior Allie Droneberger and sophomore Elisa Rugiero combining for 21 of the team's 36 kills.
• Droneberger led the team with 11 kills while hitting at a .389 clip and Rugiero added 10 kills on a staggering .563 hitting percentage.
• Junior Rachel Simon collected 29 assists and three service aces in the victory.
• Rugeiro paced the team with nine digs and senior Emily Buwawa tallied seven digs, plus three service aces.

MATCH 2 NOTES: Daemen d. California, 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-23)
• Four players finished with double-digit digs in the losing effort.
• Simon registered her second assist/dig double-double of the season, finishing with 26 assists and a team-high 12 digs.
• Rugiero and Droneberger totaled nine and eight kills, respectively, and both were credited with 11 digs.
• Senior Alayja Floyd posted four blocks against the host Wildcats.

• Cal closes out play in New York tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 9, when it faces Ohio Dominican at 1:30 p.m.
