Vulcans tie Lock Haven in home-opener, 1-1

McKoy records first career goal; Smith tallies seven saves in contest

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 3) – The California (PA) men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Lock Haven on Sunday afternoon in non-conference play while making its home debut at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility this season.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The Vulcans move to 0-1-1 this season after opening the year on Thursday night with a road contest.
• Lock Haven played its season-opener after being tabbed fifth in the preseason PSAC East poll.
• Cal and Lock Haven have tied three of their last five meetings dating back to the 2017 campaign.

GAME ACTION
• The Bald Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute on a goal by Tom Pombor, who tied for the team lead with four assists last season.
• California tied the score midway in the second period when junior Corey McKoy registered his first career goal at the 73:54-mark on a double assist from freshman Andriy Bilous and senior Tyler Sims.
• Senior Payton Smith tallied seven saves while facing 11 shots on Sunday.

NOTES
• Smith leads the PSAC with a combined 11 saves in two games after starting 10 games in 2022.
• Freshman Jacob Gretz earned his first career start against Lock Haven.
• Cal placed all three of its shot attempts on net in the contest.
