California surges past Edinboro, 31-10

Vulcans hold Fighting Scots to under 220 yards of total offense; Hopkins posts 100-yard receiving game

EDINBORO, Pa. (Sept. 23) – The California (PA) football team rallied off 31-unasnwered points on Saturday afternoon to cruise to a 31-10 victory at Edinboro in the opening week of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The Vulcans improve to 2-1 this year and open league action with a victory for the 18th-straight time.
• The Fighting Scots fall to 1-3 overall after posting a win last week at Bloomsburg.
• Cal extended its winning streak in the series with Edinboro to 17 games, including nine-straight wins at Sox Harrison Stadium.

GAME ACTION
• The Fighting Scots scored the lone points of the first quarter on a 28-yard field goal at the 8:29-mark.
• Cal claimed the lead with 8:02 remaining in the second quarter on a five-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Davis Black to sophomore wide receiver Eric Willis III.
• The Vulcans prevented a last-minute score by the Fighting Scots in the first half when junior defensive back Dominic Solomon, Jr. recovered a fumble in the end zone.
• Cal stretched the lead to 21-7 in the third quarter with a pair of touchdown runs by junior running back Eric McKan III.
• Early in the fourth quarter, Black found junior wide receiver Omari Hopkins for a two-yard touchdown.
• The Vulcans added a 29-yard field goal by junior Anthony Beitko with 5:22 left to play to extend the lead to 31-3.
• Edinboro scored a touchdown in the closing seconds of the contest.

STATS/NOTES
• Hopkins finished with a season-high 121 receiving yards and one touchdown on six catches.
• Willis made six receptions for the third-straight game, totaling 83 yards with one score.
• Black posted 224 passing yards on 15-of-26 attempts with two touchdowns and one interception.
• The Vulcans limited the Fighting Scots to only 216 yards of total offense.
• Junior linebacker John Hutchinson led the team with six tackles.
• Junior defensive lineman Gaige Hill collected four stops and was credited with a pair of forced fumbles.
• Senior linebacker Matt Tobey made an interception on the last play of the third quarter.
• McKan totaled 35 rushing on 12 carries with two touchdowns.
• Cal controlled possession for over 21 minutes in the second half.

NEXT
• The Vulcans return to Adamson Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 30, when they host Clarion in PSAC West play at 12 p.m.
