LATROBE, Pa. (April 2) – Despite splitting the singles session, the Vulcans were edged by a 4-3 margin against Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Sunday afternoon at Latrobe High School.
With the loss, the California (PA) tennis team falls to 6-8 this season with a 0-2 mark in divisional play. The Vulcans previously played a pair of non-conference matches last week after opening conference action on March 25. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 4-8 overall behind a 2-2 record in league play.
Seton Hill captured the doubles point on Sunday after winning all three matches. At the first position, freshman
Leandra Guldimann (Oberweningen, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Zürich Nord) and sophomore
Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) suffered a 6-2 loss to Kasey Storkel and Carissa Shephard. Junior
Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and freshman
Diletta Maria Mungo (Padova, Italy/Liceo Classico Tito) dropped a 6-4 match at the second slot to Maria Pereda and Kendall McCluskey. Sophomores
Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) and
Anna Oblock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canon-McMillan) were downed by a 6-1 margin at third doubles by Julianna Begley and Sophia Solomon.
The Vulcans and Griffins split the six singles matches while in Latrobe. Mungo improved to 6-2 this spring at the first position following a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Storkel on Sunday. Guldimann was outlasted by a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 margin at the second slot by Shepard, while Ojeda collected a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 win against Pereda at the third position. Duran registered a 6-2, 6-0 victory at fourth singles against McCluskey, while junior
Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Begley at the fifth slot. Hoin was dealt a 6-0, 6-2 defeat at the sixth position by Solomon.
Cal returns to the court tomorrow, Monday, April 3, when it hosts Clarion at Roadman Park, starting at 4 p.m.
