Vulcans fall at nationally-ranked IUP, 6-1

Duran posts win at fourth singles; Crimson Hawks finish divisional play with undefeated mark

INDIANA, Pa. (April 14) – Facing the two-time, defending-league champion, the Vulcans suffered a 6-1 loss at No. 41 IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Friday afternoon.

With the loss, the California (PA) tennis team falls to 7-11 this season with a 1-4 record in league action with one match remaining in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks advance to 10-9 overall behind a 6-0 mark in divisional play.

IUP claimed the doubles point as it swept the doubles contests. Freshmen Leandra Guldimann (Oberweningen, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Zürich Nord) and Diletta Maria Mungo (Padova, Italy/Liceo Classico Tito Livio) were dealt a 6-0 defeat at first doubles by the No. 38 tandem of Karolin Kirchtag and Katy Graydon. Junior Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and sophomore Maria Del Mar Ojedam (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) lost by a 6-0 margin to the No. 20 duo of Natalie Kmoskova and Joanna Stralka at the second slot. At the third position, junior Sierra Everett (Philadelphia, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) and sophomore Anna Oblock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canon-McMillan) yielded a 6-0 loss to Lydia Vlachou and Idoia Huerta.

In singles competition, Mungo suffered a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Kirchtag at first singles and Guldimann was dealt a 6-1, 6-2 defeat versus Kmoshova at the second slot. At the third position, Ojeda lost by a 6-1, 6-0 margin to Stralka before Duran won by retirement over Graydon at fourth singles. Junior Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) lost to Vlachou at the fifth position by a score of 6-0, 6-0 and sophomore Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) was dealt a 6-0, 6-1 loss against Huerta at the sixth slot.

Cal returns to action on Tuesday, April 18, as it hosts Slippery Rock at Roadman Park in the final match of the regular season at 4 p.m.
