Cal falls to Slippery Rock in finale, 7-0

Vulcans conclude campaign with seven victories; Trio of players finish with 10 wins in singles play

CALIFORNIA (April 18) – In its final match of the season, the California (PA) tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action at the Roadman Park Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

With the loss, the Vulcans finish the year at 7-12 overall with a 1-5 record in league action. Cal has won a combined 15 matches over the last two seasons under head coach Anita Onufer after totaling 11 victories the previous five years. Meanwhile, The Rock has won seven of its last eight matches and improves to 13-7 this season behind a 5-1 mark in conference contests.

The Rock swept doubles session to secure the doubles point on Tuesday. At the first position, freshmen Leandra Guldimann (Oberweningen, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Zürich Nord) and Diletta Maria Mungo (Padova, Italy/Liceo Classico Tito Livio) were handed a 6-2 loss to the nationally-ranked tandem of Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and Teddi Isherwood. Junior Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and sophomore Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) fell at second doubles by a score of 6-3 versus Gabriela del Val del Toro and Nuria Martin Lopez. At the third slot, sophomore Anna Oblock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and junior Sierra Everett (Philadelphia, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) yielded a 6-0 defeat against Tina Slovak and Dari Sakhanova.

The Rock swept the singles competition to clinch the match victory. Sanchez tallied a 6-3, 6-3 win over Mungo at first singles, while Guldimann suffered a 6-4, 6-1 loss to del Val del Toro at the second slot. At the third position, Ojeda was dealt a 6-1, 6-0 loss by Sakhanova followed by Duran yielding a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Lopez at fourth singles. Junior Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) lost to Slovak at the fifth position before sophomore Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Isherwood at the sixth slot.
