CALIFORNIA (April 12) – Despite capturing the doubles point, the California (PA) tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss versus Edinboro at Roadman Park in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 7-10 overall with a 1-3 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 6-11 this season behind a 3-3 mark in league contests.
Cal claimed the doubles point for the first time in divisional action, as it won two of the three matches. Freshmen
Leandra Guldimann (Oberweningen, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Zürich Nord) and
Diletta Maria Mungo (Padova, Italy/Liceo Classico Tito Livio) registered a 6-4 victory at the first slot against Rafaella Negrao De Almeida and Marina Zottele. Sophomore
Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) and junior
Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) tallied a 6-3 win over Cecillia Carayol and Maria Clara Salomao at second doubles, while junior
Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) and sophomore
Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) were dealt a 6-1 defeat from Sandra Riecken and Ana Nadai at the third position.
In singles competition, Edinboro won four of six contests to claim the match victory on Wednesday. Mungo posted a 4-6, 6-4, 1-4 win at first singles over De Almeida to mark her 10th victory of the spring. Guldimann suffered a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Carayol at the second slot, while Ojeda handed Riecken a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the third position for career-best 10th win this year. Duran yielded a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Zottele at fourth singles and Feltenberger lost by a 6-1, 6-2 margin at the fifth slot slot to Nadi. Hoin was handed a 6-1, 6-1 defeat by Salomao at sixth singles at Roadman Park.
Cal returns to action on Saturday, April 15, when it travels to face two-time, defending-league champion IUP in PSAC West play at 1 p.m.
