ORLANDO, Fla. (March 9) – The California (PA) tennis team split two of their matches on Wednesday as it continues its spring trip in Florida. The Vulcans notched a 7-2 win over Trine (Ind.), an NCAA Division III program in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) before suffering a 4-3 loss to Winona State (Minn.) from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
With the split, Cal moves to 3-5 on the season with only one more match scheduled in Florida. Meanwhile, the Thunder fall to 5-3 with the Warriors advancing to 5-2.
The Vulcans earned a pair of points in the doubles competition against Trine. Freshman
Leandra Guldimann (Oberweningen, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Zürich Nord) and sophomore
Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) earned an 8-1 victory over Eva Morales and Elina Locane in the first double position. Junior
Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and freshman
Diletta Maria Mungo (Padova, Italy/Liceo Classico Tito Livio) tallied an 8-1 win over Alexis Maloney and Lizzie Welker in the second slot of double while sophomores
Anna Oblock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and
Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) lost at third doubles by an 8-2 margin to Emille Bassett and Bailey Pelliccia.
In the first position of singles action, Mungo picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Morales while Ojeda won 6-4, 5-7 against Locane in second singles. Guldimann hand Bassett a 6-2, 6-1 loss in the third singles slot and Durman dealt a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Maloney at fourth singles. Junior
Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) posted a 6-3, 7-6, 1-0 victory at the fifth singles position versus Pelliccia. Oblock yielded a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Kennedy Outwater in sixth singles.
Against Winona State, the Warriors swept the doubles contests as Guldimann and Ojeda surrendered a 6-3 loss to Beth Murman and Sara Anderson at first doubles while Duran and Mungo suffered a 6-1 loss at second doubles to Rachel Kelly and Ally Burger. Oblock and Hoin were dealt a 6-3 loss a third doubles to Chloe Pecarich and Mikayla Hanson.
During singles action, Winona State register four wins to secure the match victory. Mungo earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at the first slot of singles competition over Murman while Guldimann was handed a 6-2, 6-0 loss at second singles to Kelly. In the third singles position, Ojeda notched a 7-6, 5-4 win versus Clara Thoemke followed by Durman earning a 6-1, 6-2, 1-0 over Maddie Moe at fourth singles. Feltenberger yielded a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Burger in the fifth singles slot before Hoin lost 6-3, 6-1 to Miranda Daulong at sixth singles.
Cal returns to action today, Thursday, March 9, as it concludes the spring trip in Florida against Warner (Fla.), a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school at 4 p.m. at Kissimmee, Florida.
