ORLANDO (March 7) – Despite collecting three wins in singles play, the Vulcans suffered a 4-3 loss to Concordia (Minn.) in their second contest of the spring trip in Florida on Tuesday afternoon.
With the loss, the California (PA) tennis team moves to 2-4 this season. Meanwhile, the Cobbers – a NCAA Division III program – improve to 6-6 overall under fifth-year head coach Zach Zitur.
Concordia earned the point from the doubles session with a pair of wins. Sophomore
Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) and freshman
Leandra Guldimann (Oberweningen, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Zürich Nord) were dealt a 6-3 loss by Raquel Egge and Mary Skorich at the first slot. Junior
Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and freshman
Diletta Maria Mungo (Padova, Italy/Liceo Classico Tito Livio) notched a 6-4 victory at the second position, while junior
Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) and sophomore
Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) lost by a 6-0 margin at third doubles.
During the singles session, the Cobbers and Vulcans split the six matches. At the first slot, Guldimann lost by a 6-1, 6-1 count to Egge while Mungo earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles over Skorich. Ojeda earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory at the third position over Anna Hacker and Duran registered a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles over Emily Savageau. Feltenberger fell 6-4, 6-1 margin to Lizzie Allen at the fifth position, while sophomore
Anna Oblock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canon-McMillan) lost 6-1, 6-2 match at the sixth slot to Erin Borchard.
Cal returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 8, with a pair of matches in Florida against Trine (Ind.) and Winona State (Minn.), starting at 8 a.m.
