Vulcans open PSAC West action

ERIE, Pa. (March 25) – In their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West match of the season, the Vulcans suffered a 7-0 loss at Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon at the Westwood Racquet Club.

With the loss, the California (PA) tennis team falls to 5-6 overall with a 0-1 mark in PSAC West play. Meanwhile, the Lakers advance to 5-6 this season an open league action with a 1-0 record.

Mercyhurst swept the doubles session in the match, as freshman Leandra Guldimann (Oberweningen, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Zürich Nord) and sophomore Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) lost by a 6-3 margin at first doubles to Kayla Dean and Roisin Murphy. Junior Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and freshman Diletta Maria Mungo (Padova, Italy/Liceo Classico Tito Livio) were dealt a 6-0 loss at the second position by Nadja Ostojic and Kiersten Brown and sophomores Anna Oblock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) dropped a 6-0 match to Janice Theodora and Sara Bertolez Puente at the third slot.

In singles competition, Mungo lost at the first slot by a 6-0, 6-2 margin to nationally-ranked Dean and Guldimann dropped a 6-2, 7-5 match at the second position to Murphy. Ojeda was defeated at third singles by Puente by a score of 6-4, 6-2 and Duran suffered a 6-0, 6-0 loss at the fourth position to Brown. At fifth singles, junior Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) lost by a 6-0, 6-0 margin to Valentine Budin and Hoin fell at sixth singles to Theodora by a score of 6-1, 6-1.

Cal returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 26, as it travels to face West Virginia Wesleyan in non-conference play at 2 p.m.
