Vulcans edge past Shepherd, 64-63

Smith records first career double-double; California collects nearly 20 offensive rebounds

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (Dec. 2) – The No. 10 California (PA) women's basketball team scored the go-ahead basket with less than one minute remaining on Saturday afternoon to claim a 64-63 win at Shepherd in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

RECORDS/SERIES
• The Vulcans improve to 6-1 overall with a 2-0 mark in league play.
• The Rams fall to 1-5 this season behind a 0-2 record in conference action.
• Cal has won four of five meetings against Shepherd since the Rams joined the PSAC.

STATS
• Senior Jordan Smith recorded her first career double-double and led the team with 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds (five offensive).
• Junior Allycia Harris posted 12 points and eight rebounds (six offensive) while playing 28 minutes.
• Sophomore Alicia Young finished with eight points and four rebounds on Saturday.
• Junior Iyahnna Williams added eight points, three assists and three steals off the bench.

GAME ACTION
• Cal posted an 11-2 run midway through the first quarter to take a 20-12 lead at the 3:43-mark.
• The Vulcans later led by as many as nine points before holding a 26-21 lead at the end of the first quarter.
• The pace slowed down in the second quarter with each team scoring 13 points.
• Shepherd cut the deficit to as few as four points in the quarter before trailing 39-34 at the break following a three-pointer at the buzzer.
• The Rams mounted a 10-2 rally midway through the third quarter to claim a 45-44 lead with 2:56 left.
• Shepherd held a three-point lead later in the quarter before Cal scored in the closing seconds to cut the deficit to 52-51.
• The teams combined for five lead changes in the fourth quarter on Saturday.
• The Vulcans scored on three-straight possessions to start the fourth quarter and take a 57-52 lead with 7:50 remaining.
• Shepherd later posted a 9-2 run to seize a 63-60 lead at the 1:40-mark.
• Harris and Williams scored on back-to-back possessions to give Cal a 64-63 lead with 55 seconds left in regulation.
• The Rams missed a pair of shots in the final 30-plus seconds, as the Vulcans preserved the lead.
• Cal posted a .390 field-goal percentage (23-of-59), while Shepherd shot 50 percent (23-of-46) from the floor.
• The Vulcans finished with a 36-27 rebounding advantage behind 19 offensive rebounds.
• Shepherd graduate student Cara Minor led the team with 14 points.

NEXT
• The Vulcans are idle for over a week before hosting Fairmont State on Dec. 12 in non-conference play at the Convocation Center with tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
