CALIFORNIA (Sept. 28) – Led by a pair of first-half goals, the Vulcans shutout Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-West foe Edinboro to earn a 2-0 victory on Thursday night at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the win, the California (Pa) women's soccer team improves to 2-5-2 overall with a 2-4-2 mark in conference action. The Vulcans have won back-to-back meetings in the series after the Fighting Scots posted a seven-game winning streak that lasted from 2015-21. Meanwhile, Edinboro drops to 1-6-2 overall behind a 1-5-2 record in PSAC West play.
Within the opening two minutes, each team went back and forth in attacking positions as Edinboro tallied a shot at the 1:12-mark followed by Cal registering a shot at the 2:14-mark. Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) gave Cal the lead after gathering the ball in the box for a goal to the right side of net. Between the 19th-21st minute, the Vulcans remained on the attack as they complied a shot on goal and corner kick. Edinboro and Cal traded the next four shot attempts. Kaylee Elwood (Apollo, Pa./Kiski) scored on a penalty kick.
Early in the second half, the Fighting Scots came out aggressive as they attempted two shots and a corner kick within an eight-minute span. Between the 61st-63rd minutes, senior
Juliana Cruz (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock Township) tallied a pair of shot attempts, one of which was on goal. The Vulcan defense held strong for the remainder of the game, as it only allowed two shots and a corner kick in the last 19 minutes of action. Cal controlled the ball in the last minutes oft he game, recording a pair of shot attempts and a corner in a three-minute span.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) collected four saves in 90 minutes of action, as she registered her fourth shutout of the season.
The Vulcans out-shot Edinboro by an 11-9 margin, while both teams recorded three corner kicks.
Cal returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 5, as it travels to face IUP in PSAC West play at 4 p.m.
