INDIANA, Pa. (Oct. 5) – The California (PA) women's soccer team erased a halftime deficit with a pair of unanswered goals in the second half to earn a 2-1 win at IUP on Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 3-5-2 overall with a 3-4-2 mark in conference action. Cal has now surpassed last year's point total in the league standings and matched its highest point total since the 2017 campaign. Meanwhile, IUP falls to 2-4-4 overall with all 10 games against divisional opponents.
Cal applied early pressure with sophomore
Ashley Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) tallying a shot attempt at the 1:38-mark followed by a corner kick in the fourth minute. Over a four-minute span early in the contest, the Vulcans remained aggressive by recording a corner kick and a pair of shots. Both teams traded the next two shot attempts until the Crimson Hawks posted three-straight attempts. Cal and IUP exchanged field position for the next 30 minutes, while in that timeframe the Vulcans recorded five shot attempts. With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, IUP took a 1-0 lead after Hannah Scardina scored at the bottom center of the net.
Early in the second half Cal tied the game when redshirt freshman
Kaylee Elwood (Apollo, Pa./Kiski) converted on a penalty kick. Nearly seven minutes later, senior
Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) collected her third goal of the season in the bottom right of the net and gave the Vulcans a 2-1 lead at the 54:58-mark.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) tied a season high with seven saves in 90 minutes while earning her third win of the year.
IUP out-shot Cal by a 16-12 margin, while both teams posted eight corner kicks in the contest.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8, as they host Pitt-Johnstown on Senior Day in a divisional play at 3:30 p.m.
