Women's Soccer downed at Gannon, 2-1

Sims notches first career goal; Teams combine for 34 shots in contest on Saturday

ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 24) – The California (PA) women's soccer team was unable to overcome a second-half goal on Saturday afternoon and suffered a 2-1 loss on the road against Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 1-5-2 overall with a 1-4-2 mark in divisional action. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights improve to 6-1-2 this season with a 5-0-2 record in league competition.

In the opening 10 minutes of the game, both teams combined for one shot which came from Gannon. At the 11:39-mark, redshirt freshman Christyana Sims (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) notched her first career goal off an assist from senior Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch). Between the 21st and 22nd minute, Cal maintained its aggression as it recorded a pair of corner kicks and a shot attempt. From the 36th and 44th minute, the Lady Knights were on the attack as they recorded seven shots with one on goal. In the final minute of the first half, Gannon tied the game at 1-1 on a goal from June Monasterio.

In the initial 10 minutes of the second half, both teams struggled as they combined for three total shots, all by the Lady Knights. In the following 15 minutes, Cal and Gannon continued to trade field position as the Lady Knights notched four shot attempts to one attempt by Cal. At the 74:25-mark, Gannon claimed the lead on a goal by Sarah Fails. In the next five minutes, the Vulcans managed one shot attempt which sailed high of the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) collected four saves in 90 minutes of action on Saturday.

Gannon out-shot Cal by a 24-10 margin, while the Vulcans held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 28, as it hosts Edinboro in PSAC West action at 6 p.m.
