GREENSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 24) – The California (PA) men's soccer team began its road three-game trip with a 4-1 loss at Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 1-5-1 this season behind a 0-3 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Griffins move to 2-6-1 overall with a 1-1-1 mark in divisional competition
Cal attacked early as it tallied two shots on goal within the opening minute of action, first on a header from junior
Kobe Norfleet (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) and an attempt by senior
Adam Wood (Toronto, Ontario/Don Mills Collegiate Institute) five seconds later. At the 2:14-mark, Seton Hill applied pressure with a shot on goal that was saved by freshman goalkeeper
AJ Visco (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). In the next 30 seconds, Cal found itself in the attacking zone again and tallied a pair of shots within a 25-second span followed by a corner kick at the 4:27-mark. The Griffins was able to take an early lead after Anton Dupont Linden scored in the right corner of the net. Within the next 13 minutes, Seton Hill was whistled for four offsides before a shot attempt at the 19:08-mark. In the next six minutes, both teams traded a pair of shot attempts until Seton Hill scored at the 26:26-mark on a header. In the 34th minute, the Griffins added another insurance goal from Fletcher Amos on a give-and-go. In the closing five minutes of the first half, Cal registered a pair of shots and a corner kick.
Within the initial five minutes of the second half, the Vulcans were on the attack as they recorded three consecutive corner kicks with a shot on goal from sophomore
Logan Errett (McDonald, Pa./Trinity). In the 52nd minute, Cal kept attacking as it notched a trio of shots along with a corner kick. At the 59:29-mark, Seton Hill recorded a pair of corner kicks before a goal in the 61st minute. Cullin Woytovich (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) scored his first goal of the season off a dish from sophomore
Joshua Rifkin (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell Egan Catholic). In the final 10 minutes of the game, Cal managed one shot which sailed high of the net.
Visco registered a season-high four saves on Saturday while playing all 90 minutes for the second time this year.
The Griffins out-shot Cal by a 17-11 advantage, while the Vulcans held a 10-8 edge on corner kicks.
Cal returns to action Saturday, Oct. 1, as it travels to Erie, Pennsylvania, to face Gannon in PSAC West play at 7:30 p.m.
