Vulcans downed at Gannon, 7-1

Smith tallies career-high 10 saves; Sims scores first career goal in seventh minute

ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 1) – Facing the top scoring offense in the league, the Vulcans dropped a 7-1 contest at Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday night at McConnell Family Stadium.

With the loss, the California (PA) men's soccer team falls to 1-6-1 overall and 0-4 in divisional action. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights improve to an 8-2-1 mark behind a 3-0-1 PSAC West record under fourth-year head coach Billy Colton, who helped Gannon make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season.

In the opening five minutes of the game, neither team registered a shot until the 5:15-mark when Gannon's attempt sailed wide left of the net. At the 6:37-mark, junior Tyler Sims (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) scored his first career goal as he crossed from the left wing to finish past the goalie off a dish from classmate Kobe Norfleet (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold). In the next five minutes of action, both teams combined for one shot attempt which came from the Golden Knights. Gannon tied the game at the 12:55-mark on a penalty kick from Sergio Del Castillo. In the 16th minute, the Golden Knights continued to apply pressure as they recorded a shot on goal, followed by the second goal of the game by Del Castillo. The Cal offense entered its attacking zone as senior Adam Wood (Toronto, Ontario/Don Mills Collegiate Institute) tallied a shot. In the remainder of the half, the Golden Knights notched seven shots, four of which were on goal, while the Vulcans registered a pair of shots along with a corner kick.

Within the initial 12 minutes of the second half, Gannon extended its lead to 5-1 after a trio of goals. In the 64th minute, Cal recorded a pair of corner kicks, however, no shot attempt resulted. Between the 68th and 75th minute, the Knights notched another pair of goals to stretch the lead to 7-1.

Junior goalkeeper Payton Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Lincoln) collected a career-high 10 saves in 90 minutes of action.

Gannon out-shot Cal by a 29-5 margin, while the Golden Knights also held a 12-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 5, as they travel to face West Liberty in non-conference play at 7:30 p.m.
