WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. (Oct. 5) – The Vulcans converted an early penalty kick and added a goal late in the second half on Wednesday night to claim a 2-0 victory at West Liberty in non-conference action.
With the win, the California (PA) men's soccer teams snaps a four-game losing streak and improves to 2-6-1 with both wins being on the road. Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers fall to 1-8-2 this season.
The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on Wednesday when senior
Chance Pursifull (Germantown, Ohio/Valley View) scored on a penalty kick, his third career goal and second on penalty kick. Midway through the first half, West Liberty recorded back-to-back corner kicks before a shot attempt was blocked in the 26th minute. Cal attempted to add to its lead nearly 10 minutes later before a pair of shot attempts sailed high of the goal.
In the 49th minute, junior
Cullin Woytovich (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) placed a shot in the lower right of the net that was saved by the West Liberty goalkeeper. The Hilltoppers placed an attempt on goal at the 58:22-mark before a shot six minutes later sailed left of the net. Cal added to its lead in the 76th minute when junior
Kobe Norfleet (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) tallied his first goal of the year off a feed from Woytovich, 2-0. Norfleet placed another shot attempt on net just over two minutes later before the Hilltoppers countered with a shot on goal at the 78:57-mark.
Junior
Payton Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Lincoln) recorded his second career shutout on Wednesday. He posted a pair of saves while playing all 90 minutes at West Liberty.
Cal finished with a 10-8 shot advantage, including a 6-2 mark in shots on goal. The Hilltoppers posted a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to conference play on Saturday, Oct. 8, when they host Pitt-Johnstown at 1 p.m.
