CALIFORNIA (Sept. 19) – The Vulcans posted five wins in singles play on Monday afternoon to earn a 6-1 match victory against Saint Vincent, a nearby NCAA Division III program, at the Roadman Park Tennis Complex.
With the victory, the California (PA) tennis team improves to 1-1 overall with both matches being in the last six days. Meanwhile, the Bearcats fall to 3-2 this season while playing their first non-conference match of the fall.
The Vulcans captured the doubles point in the win on Monday. At the first position, freshman
Leandra Guldimann (Oberweningen, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Zurich Nord) and sophomore
Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) suffered a 7-5 loss to Carolina Walters and Angela Popovich. Junior
Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and sophomore
Teodora Iacob (Bucharest, Romania/O'Neill CVI (Ontario)) posted a 7-6 victory at the second slot against Abby Donnelly Lydia Lieb. At third doubles, junior
Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) and sophomore
Anna Oblock (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canon-McMillan) earned a 6-2 win over Emily Pierce and Cara McLaughlin.
Cal clinched the match victory by posting five wins in the singles session. Guldimann recorded the first singles victory of her career with a 7-4, 4-6, 1-0 win at the first slot over Walters, who was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Rookie of the Week earlier on Monday. Ojeda collected a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the second position against Popovich – an All-PAC First-Team singles selection last year – and Duran registered a 6-0, 6-2 win over Pierce at third singles. Iacob claimed a 6-4, 6-2 victory versus Lieb at the fourth slot and Feltenberger registered a 6-1, 6-1 win at the fifth position against Bella Baumgardner. At sixth singles, junior
Sierra Everett (Philadelphia, Pa/Owen J. Roberts) dropped 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 match to Donnelly.
The Vulcans are idle for over a week before traveling to face Fairmont State on Sept. 27 in non-conference action.
