Vulcans fall to Seton Hill in opener, 6-1

Iacob notches win at fourth singles; California captures victory at second doubles

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 14) – The California (PA) tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss to Seton Hill in a non-conference match to open the fall portion of its schedule at the Roadman Park Tennis Complex on Wednesday night.

With the loss, the Vulcans open the season 0-1 overall after having their initial season-opening postponed earlier this week. Meanwhile, the Griffins improve to 1-1 after starting year last fall.

Seton Hill claimed the doubles point after winning a pair of matches in the session. At the first slot, freshman Leandra Guldimann (Oberweningen, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Zürich Nord) and sophomore Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) were dealt a 6-1 loss by Kasey Storkel and Carissa Shepard. Juniors Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) earned a 6-2 victory at the second position over Maria Pereda and Kendall McCluskey. In third doubles, sophomores Teodora Iacob (Bucharest, Romania/O'Neill CVI (Ontario)) and Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) fell by a 6-3 margin to Julianna Begley and Sophia Solomon.

The Griffins won five of the six singles matches to secure the match victory on Wednesday. Guldimann suffered a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Shepard at the first slot and Del Mar Ojeda was handed a 7-5, 7-6 defeat at second singles by Storkel. Duran dropped a 7-6, 6-3 decision to Pereda at the third position. Iacob notched a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory at the fourth slot over McClusky, while Feltenberger was dealt a 6-3, 6-4 loss at the fifth position to Begley. Junior Sierra Everett Philadelphia, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) fell by a 6-2, 6-1 margin against Solomon at sixth singles.

Cal is set to return to the courts at Fairmont State on Tuesday, Sept. 27, with play starting at 3 p.m.
