California rallies late at Lock Haven, 1-0

Panaro scores first career goal in closing seconds; Smith records shutout in first career start

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Aug. 28) – Junior Josh Panaro (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) scored the game-winning goal on a header with 17 seconds left in regulation, as the Vulcans earned a 1-0 victory at Lock Haven on Sunday afternoon in non-conference play.

With the win, the California (PA) men's soccer team improves to 1-1 this season while recording its first road shutout since last September. Meanwhile, Lock Haven drops to 0-2 overall after earning a berth to the NCAA Tournament last year.

The Bald Eagles were whistled for a foul in the final minute of play to set up the eventual game-winning score. Senior Jake Nebinski (Ardara, Pa./Norwin) directed the free kick to the back post with Panaro placing the header into the bottom corner of the net for his first career goal. Nebinski was credited with his first assist of the season and the ninth of his career.

Junior transfer Payton Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Lincoln) recorded a shutout while making his first career start. He made four saves on Sunday while facing nine shots, including six in the second half, over 90 minutes.

In the first half, Lock Haven attempted the initial shot of the contest in the 10th minute before placing a shot on net at the 20:48-mark. The Bald Eagles later tallied a shot in the 38th minute that was wide of the net before being whistled for offsides five minutes later.

The teams traded a shot on goal within 20 seconds of each other in the 48th minute. The Bald Eagles were awarded a penalty kick at the 56:40-mark that was saved by Smith to preserve the scoreless tie. In the 85th minute, Lock Haven placed a shot on net before another shot sailed wide of the net nearly two minutes later.

Lock Haven finished with a 9-4 shot advantage, while Cal held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks with all three attempts in the second half.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 3, when they host Cedarville (Ohio) in non-conference play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Complex, starting at 3 p.m.
