CALIFORNIA, Pa. (Sept. 3) – The California (PA) men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Cedarville (Ohio) in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.
With the loss, the Vulcans move to 1-2 overall while playing teams from three different conferences. Cal has also now faced back-to-back opponents that appeared in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets move to 2-0-1 this season under 10th-year head coach Brett Faro, who guided the program to a 14-win campaign last fall.
Cal applied early pressure by attempting a pair of shots in the opening six minutes of the game, however both sailed high. The Yellow Jackets later attempted two corner kicks in just over 30 seconds that resulted in a shot hitting the post. As the first half progressed, Cedarville continued to apply pressure by recording six corner kicks in less than 10 minutes with the Cal defense standing strong to keep the contest scoreless at halftime.
In the 65th minute, senior
Jake Nebinski (Ardara, Pa./Norwin) played a corner kick that led to a shot attempt by junior
Tyler Sims (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) which sailed wide of the net. With less than 10 minutes left to play, Mauricio Ochoa Vazquez gave Cedarville the lead at the 81:50-mark as his shot squeezed to the top-left corner of the net. Cal was able to tally a corner kick in the 85th minutes but was unable to record a shot attempt in the final minutes.
Freshman goalkeeper
AJ Visco (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) earned the start and played a scoreless first half and junior goalkeeper
Payton Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Lincoln) played the entire second half.
The Yellow Jackets held an 11-6 edge in shots and finished with a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to action Saturday, September 10, as they travel to face Ohio Dominican in Columbus, Ohio, with a start time of 2 p.m.
