DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 6) – Freshman Caleigh Rister (Bucyrus, Ohio/Bucyrus) belted a three-run homer and tossed a complete-game shutout on Sunday, as the Vulcans cruised to a 13-0 run-rule victory over Mary (N.D.) at THE Spring Games.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania softball team improves to 5-4 this season.
Rister yielded four hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 6.0 scoreless innings. She also went 2-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored from the leadoff spot. Rister is hitting at a .586 clip (17-for-29) with 16 RBI and 14 scored this season, while also posting a 3-1 record and a 1.7.0 ERA in 24.2 innings pitched.
Junior center fielder Mackenzie Carson (Tucson, Ariz./Cienega) finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore right fielder Charity Henderson (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore third baseman Britney Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) collected two hits with one run scored and senior catcher Brooke Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) posted a pair of hits.
The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Henderson before scoring two runs on a triple by Rister in the fourth. Cal U stretched the lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning with four unearned runs. Carson posted an RBI single before Rister belted a three-run homer, her third of the year, with two outs.
In the sixth, Cal U tallied six runs on seven singles and one double to force the run-rule victory. Carson and pinch hitter sophomore Delaney Girvin (Masontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) collected back-to-back RBI singles before junior Kira Hillhouse (Erie, Pa./McDowell) delivered a pinch-hit RBI double. Following a pitching change, Henderson and pinch hitter Marissa Bacco (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) later added RBI singles.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Monday, March 7, when they face St. Cloud State (Minn.) in Florida.
