Vulcans downed by St. Cloud State, 6-2

Barrson retired 14 of first 15 batters faced; Vulcans finish with nine runners left on base

DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 7) – The California University of Pennsylvania softball team suffered a 6-2 loss against St. Cloud State (Minn.) after surrendering a pair of late two-run homers on Monday afternoon at THE Spring Games.

With the loss, the Vulcans drop to 5-5 this season with a 2-2 mark while in Florida. Cal U has played teams from four difference states during their opening three days in The Sunshine State.

Senior starter Kelsey Barron (La Salle, Mich./St. Mary Catholic Central) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (all earned) on eight hits in 5.2 innings. She retired 14 of the first 15 batters she faced in the before yielding three-straight hits with two outs in the top of the fifth. Barron holds a 2-3 record this spring while working a team-leading 25.1 innings pitched.

The Vulcans left runners on base in three-straight innings before the Huskies mounted a two-out rally in the fifth. Following a single, second baseman Lydia Kureger belted a two-run homer to break the scoreless tie.

St. Cloud State extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the sixth with back-to-back RBI hits with two outs before Cal U made a pitching change. The Vulcans threatened with a pair of singles in the bottom of the inning before a strikeout and ground-out ended the sixth. In the seventh, the Huskies added a pair of insurance runs on a two-run homer by catcher Sydney Trees, 6-0.

The Vulcans avoided the shutout with a pair of runs on two singles and two walks in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on first and second, senior catcher Brooke Wilson (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) collected an RBI single before freshman shortstop Kaitlyn Achtermeier (Gilford, Ontario/Bill Crothers) later delivered a two-out RBI single, 6-2.

Cal U continues play in Florida tomorrow, Tuesday, March, 8 with games against American International (Mass.) and Wheeling, starting at approximately 12:15 p.m.
