Cal U blanks Ursuline in spring-opener, 7-0

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio (March 20) – The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team began its spring season by capturing a 7-0 victory at Ursuline (Ohio) on Sunday afternoon at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 5-3 overall while playing its first match since Oct. 23. Meanwhile, the Arrows – a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) - fall to 0-4 this season.

Cal U secured the doubles point after winning all three matches in the session on Sunday. Senior Fallon Winseck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and freshman Teodora Iacob (Bucharest, Romania/O'Neill CVI (Ontario) posted a 6-2 victory against Carolina Stefanski and Chloe Lewanski at first doubles. Freshman Olivia Hoin (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) and senior Fulvia Camargo (South Park, Pa./South Park) collected a 6-2 win at the second position over Megan Fortney and Alexandra Pignatiello, while sophomore Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and freshman Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/ Colegio Americano de Cali) won by forfeit at the third slot.

The Vulcans completed the match victory by winning all six matches in straight sets while in Ohio. Duran claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win at first singles over Stefansk, while Del Mar Ojeda claimed a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Lewanski at the second position. Winseck earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Fortney at third singles. At the fourth position, sophomore Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Pignatiello and freshman Olivia Anastos (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) captured a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the fifth slot. Iacob rounded out the singles matches with a win by forfeit at the sixth position.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, March 26, when it hosts Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at Roadman Park, beginning at 12 p.m.
