Vulcans fall to WV Wesleyan at home, 6-1

Cal U opens stretch of five home matches in span of 11 days; Winseck collects win at third singles

CALIFORNIA (March 31) – The Vulcans suffered their first loss of the spring season by dropping a 6-1 match to West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon in non-conference play at Roadman Park.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania tennis team falls to 5-4 this year while facing its third opponent from the Mountain East Conference (MEC). Meanwhile, the Bobcats improve to 9-5 this season.

West Virginia Wesleyan secured the doubles point after winning two matches in the session. At the first slot, sophomore Carmen Duran (Barcelona, Spain/Esteve Albert) and freshman Maria Del Mar Ojeda (Cali, Colombia/Colegio Americano de Cali) captured a 6-4 victory over Julia Pinto and Alanis Alvarez. Senior Fallon Winseck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and freshman Teodora Iacob (Bucharest, Romania/O'Neill CVI (Ontario)) suffered a 6-2 loss to Sai Sakamoto and Cayley Symons at the second position, while sophomore Kylie Feltenberger (Polk, Pa./Franklin) and freshman Olivia Anastos (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) fell by a 6-2 margin to Rebecca Osborne and Madison Chen at third doubles.

The Bobcats won five of six singles matches in singles play on Thursday to claim the match victory. Duran suffered a loss in a tight match to Sakamoto in the first slot, 1-6, 7-5, (5-10), while Del Mar Ojeda dropped a 6-0, 6-2 match to Pinto at the second position. Winseck captured a 3-6, 6-0, 10-7 victory over Alvarez at the third slot and Feltenberger dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to Symons at fourth singles. Anastos fell by a 6-1, 6-2 margin to Chen at the fifth spot, while Iacob suffered a 6-2, 6-3 defeat by Hull at sixth singles.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, April 2, when it travels to face Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, beginning at 11 a.m.
