Vulcans open spring in North Carolina

MONROE, NC. (March 14) – The Vulcans opened their spring season by finishing No. 10 in the team standings at the Jerry Surratt Invitational hosted by Wingate.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's golf team posted a 179-over 1043 (341-360-342) while playing the par-72 Stonebridge Golf Course. The host Bulldogs earned the tournament title by two strokes with a 40-over 904 (308-300-296) after shooting the lowest score in the final two rounds. Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) placed second in the team standings with a 42-over 906 (301-303-296) and Flagler (Fla.) ranked third with a 49-over 913 (302-306-305). The 10-team field was comprised mainly of teams from the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), plus a single team from the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) and Conference Carolinas (CC).

Sophomore Addi Mann (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) paced the team and tied for 41st overall on the individual leader board with a 31-over 247 (83-84-80). She played the back nine at a collective 10-over while in North Carolina, including a birdie on the par-five 18th in the second round. Mann led the team with a combined 27 pars at the event.

Freshman Madelyn Myers (Smock, Pa./Uniontown) shot a 39-over 255 (79-90-86) and tied for 48th place at the event. She recorded the lowest score on the team in the opening round at four-over 79 after carding a pair of birdies on the back nine. Classmate Keegan Selinsky (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) tied for 52nd overall after shooting a 46-over 262 (86-88-88). She opened play in the final round at one-under through eight holes with a birdie on the par-three 17th. Junior Kate Brown (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) rounded out the team scores at the event with a 63-over 279 (93-98-88) to finish in 58th place after totaling 19 pars.

As individuals, senior Colby Roberts (Libertyville, Ill/Libertyville) and junior Lexi Tofanelli (Evans City, Pa./Seneca Valley) each finished with a 57-over 273. Roberts played the front nine in the final round at six-over with a birdie on the par-three sixth. Sophomore Morgan Hughes (Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) shot a career best nine-over 81 in the final round on Tuesday while totaling nine pars.

Sophomore Sophie Wheeler of Flagler claimed medalist honors by two stokes with a two-over 218 (73-72-73) after playing only seven holes over par. She fired an eagle on the par-five 14th in the final round.

Cal U returns to action next week on March 21-22 when it hosts the Crofton Invitational in Crofton, Maryland.
