CALIFORNIA (Feb. 19) – The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team held Clarion scoreless in the second quarter while rolling to a 62-42 victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the Vulcans improve to 19-4 overall behind a 14-4 mark in league action. Cal U also extended its winning streak to five-straight games, which is the longest active streak in the conference. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 5-21 this season with a 4-17 record in conference play.
Junior
Dejah Terrell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) recorded her 11th double-double of the season, finishing with game highs of 21 points and 14 rebounds. She shot 9-of-18 from the floor, including three-of-six from long range, while tallying three blocks and two assists in 36 minutes of action.
Classmate
Ciaira Loyd (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) finished with 13 points on five-of-eight from the floor and collected five assists and three steals. Fellow junior
Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough) registered 12 points, five rebounds and two assists, while junior
Brionna Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) tallied eight rebounds (four offensive) and two steals in the win.
Clarion scored the initial basket of the contest before the Vulcans scored 11-straight points led by Terrell to hold an 11-2 lead with 5:18 left in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles rallied with a 9-2 run to trim the deficit to 13-11 at the 1:07-mark. Cal U maintained a 15-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Vulcans held Clarion scoreless in the second quarter, as the Golden Eagles went 0-of-11 from the floor and committed four turnovers. Cal U scored 16-unanswered points in the quarter to hold a 31-11 lead at halftime.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half by scoring eight-consecutive points to cut the deficit to 31-19. Cal U responded by scoring seven of eight points led by Harrison to extend its lead to 38-20 with 3:05 remaining in the third quarter. The teams traded the next 10 points with the Vulcans holding a 43-25 lead heading to the fourth quarter. After a jumper by Loyd, Clarion mounted a 6-4 run to trim the lead to 49-31. Both teams traded baskets before Cal U scored seven of the next 10 points to extend its lead to 58-37 with 3:34 remaining in regulation. Clarion scored five of the final nine points to end the game.
The Vulcans finished the game shooting 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the floor despite going 5-of-20 (25.0 percent) from three-point range. In comparison, Clarion shot at a 29.2 clip (14-of-48) from the field while going 6-of-25 (24.0 percent) from long range. Cal U held a 39-33 rebounding advantage while collecting 10 steals and scoring 20 points off turnovers.
Freshman Sierra Bermudez led the Golden Eagles with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor, including four-of-eight from three-point territory. Junior Jada Smith recorded 10 points, six rebounds and two assists, while freshman Charjae Brock collected a team-high eight rebounds.
Cal U returns to action on Monday, Feb. 21, when it hosts Slippery Rock in league action at 5:30 p.m.
