Vulcans earn win at Seton Hill, 60-51

Terrell records 10th double-double; Cal U tallies 19 offensive rebounds, 10 blocks in win

GREENSBURG, Pa. (Feb. 16) – Junior Dejah Terrell (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) posted her 10th double-double of the season, as the Vulcans captured a 60-51 victory at Seton Hill on Wednesday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 18-4 this season behind a 13-4 mark in league play. The Vulcans have swept the regular-season series for the second-straight time after losing the previous two road meetings. Meanwhile, Seton Hills falls to 20-8 overall and 14-5 in conference action.

Terrell scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor. She collected 16 rebounds (eight offensive) and posted season highs with six blocks and five assists. Terrell also tallied two steals in 38 minutes of action.

Classmate Brionna Allen (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) finished with 10 points, four rebounds and two steals, while sophomore Halle Herrington (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) tallied nine points on four-of-eight from the floor. Junior Lauren Bennett, Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upshur) recorded eight points and seven rebounds, while fellow junior Shauna Harrison (Sheffield, England/Myerscough) registered seven points, five rebounds and two steals in the win.

Seton Hill jumped out to an early 5-4 lead before the Vulcans rallied with a 7-3 run to take an 11-8 advantage midway through the first quarter. The teams traded the next eight points, as Cal U held a 15-12 lead after the first quarter. The two teams began the second quarter by going over three minutes without a basket before the Vulcans scored five-consecutive points led by Allen and Terrell. The Griffins responded by scoring nine-straight points to take a 21-20 lead with 1:11 remaining in the half. A jumper by Herrington gave Cal U a 22-21 advantage at halftime.

Seton Hill began the second half by scoring five of nine points to tie the score at 26-26. The Vulcans mounted a 7-4 run over the next two-plus minutes to regain the lead at 33-30 with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Harrison and Terrell extended the Cal U lead by scoring five of the next seven points to lead 38-32. The Vulcans ended the third quarter on a 4-3 run to lead 42-35. Cal U began the fourth quarter by mounting a 6-2 run to extend its lead to 48-37 before the Griffins rallied with a 9-4 run to trim the deficit to 52-46 at the 4:14 mark. Seton Hill cut the deficit to 54-49 before the Vulcans converted six-of-six from the charity stripe to secure the win.

Cal U finished the game shooting 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the floor and converted 13-of-14 (92.9 percent) from the foul line. Meanwhile, the Griffins shot at a 37.0 clip (20-of-54) from the field while going 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) from long range. The Vulcans held a 39-33 rebounding advantage while collecting 19 offensive reboounds and posting 10 blocks, the most since the 2009-10 campaign against West Virginia State.

Sophomore Christiane Frye led the Griffins with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor and collected five rebounds. Graduate student Cheyenne Trest and senior Samantha Kosmacki each finished with nine points, while graduate student Katie Nolan finished with eight points and 16 rebounds.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 19, when it hosts Clarion in PSAC West action at 1 p.m.
