Luckhardt inducted into College Football HOF

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 7) – Former California (PA) head football coach John Luckhardt was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night as part of the 64th National Football Foundation (NFF) Annual Awards Dinner held at the Bellagio Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Luckhardt was one of 21 individuals inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night. The NFF Annual Awards Dinner was streamed live on ESPN3 and also featured the announcement of the winner of the 33rd William V. Campbell Trophy following a press conference earlier in the morning.

One of the winningest coaches in NCAA history, Luckhardt posted a 225-70-2 overall record in 27 seasons as head coach at Washington & Jefferson and Cal U. He finished his career with a staggering .761 winning percentage while leading the Presidents and Vulcans to a combined 16 appearance in the NCAA Playoffs.

Luckhardt served as head coach at Cal U from 2002-11 and guided the program to an 88-33 overall record after inheriting a program that posted a winning record just once in the previous 14 years. He closed his coaching career by leading the Vulcans to five-consecutive appearances in the NCAA Playoffs from 2007-11, highlighted by back-to-back-to-back regional championships, after the program never previously appeared in the NCAA Playoffs. Luckhardt helped Cal U capture at least a share of seven-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West titles from 2005-11 behind a 42-4 combined mark in divisional play.

Prior to arriving at Cal U, Luckhardt built nearby W&J into one of the premier programs in NCAA Division III. He posted a 137-37-2 mark with the Presidents from 1982-98 after the program won only 29 games in the decade prior to his arrival. Under Luckhardt, W&J won 13 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships and made 11 appearances in the NCAA Playoffs, advancing to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl – the NCAA Division III National Championship – in 1992 and 1994.

Luckhardt played at Purdue under College Football Hall of Fame Coach Jack Mollenkopf. He was a center for the Boilermakers led by quarterback Bob Griese who is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame, when they won the 1967 Rose Bowl over USC.

In October, Luckhardt was recognized with a NFF On-Campus Salute by both Cal and W&J. The event at Adamson Stadium was held as part of the 13th Coal Bowl against rival IUP on Oct. 8. W&J held its NFF Salute at Cameron Stadium the following week against Carnegie Mellon.

Luckhardt becomes the first-ever representative from the Vulcans inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

The 2022 College Football Hall of Fame Class featured some of the most memorable players over the last 25 years, including notable standouts such as Penn State linebacker LaVar Arrington (1997-99), Georgia defensive back Champ Bailey (1996-98), Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree (2007-08), Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck (2009-11) and Oklahoma defensive back Roy Williams (1999-01).

Including the 2022 Hall of Fame Class, only 1,056 players and 226 coaches have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame from the nearly 5.62 million who have played or coached the game during the past 153 years. In other words, less than two one-hundredths of a percent (.02%) of the individuals who have played the game have earned this distinction.
