Six Vulcans receive academic laurels

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 15) – A total of six players from the California (PA) men's soccer team were tabbed to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team on Tuesday afternoon, as senior forward Evan Blunkosky (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny), senior defender Nehemiah Jackson (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln), senior defender Bruce Neterer (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro), junior midfielder Kobe Norfleet (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold), junior midfielder Zach Vanek (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) and senior defender Adam Wood (Toronto, Ontario/Don Mills Collegiate Institute) earned the award.

With the honor, all six players are eligible for consideration on the CSC Academic All-America Teams that will be announced next month. The CSC Academic All-America program replaces the former CoSIDA Academic All-America program after CoSIDA recently rebranded the organization as College Sports Communicators.

Blunkosky appeared in all 16 games with eight starts and recorded a goal and assist this year. He maintains a cumulative 3.63 grade-point average while majoring in biology with a concentration in secondary education.

A native of Ohio, Jackson appeared in 12 games with seven starts this fall and helped Cal record a total of four shutouts. He holds a 3.58 GPA while pursuing a degree in sport management.

Neterer started five games and made 11 appearances this season. He maintains a 3.63 GPA while majoring in finance.

A native of Canada, Wood received All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Second-Team honors for the initial time in his career this year. He started all 16 games for the Vulcans, which featured a pair of first-year starters in net. Wood holds a 3.69 GPA while completing a degree in criminal justice.

Norfleet played all 16 games and started 14-consecutive games this fall. He led the team with three assists and ranked second with a career-high seven points. Norfleet maintains a 3.78 GPA while majoring in economics with a minor in management.

A Hempfield product, Vanek appeared in 14 games as a reserve and scored one goal this season. He holds a 3.78 GPA while majoring in economics.

To qualify for the academic all-district honors, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and in athletic eligibility, must maintain a cumulative 3.50 GPA or higher and must have played at least 50 percent of the team's games. Additionally, each institution is capped at six nominees in the sport of men's soccer.
