Vulcans shutout Seton Hill at home, 1-0

Miocic scores first career goal in 77th minute; Ouimet registers fifth shutout this fall

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 26) – Senior Maria Miocic (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) recorded the game-winning goal in the 77th minute, as the California (PA) women's soccer team registered a 1-0 win against Seton Hill on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 6-8-2 overall with a 6-7-2 mark in divisional action. Cal ranks fifth in the PSAC West standings with 20 points entering the final weekend of the regular season and sits just two points back of the final spot in the PSAC Tournament. Meanwhile, the Griffins drop to 8-3-6 this season behind a 6-3-6 record in conference play.

Cal entered ithe attacking zone early as it attempted a corner kick at the 1:36-mark. Seton Hill countered with five corner kicks in a seven-minute span in addition to a pair of shots. In the 21st minute, senior Claire Mercurio (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) tallied a shot attempt that sailed wide right of the net. Both teams traded field position over the next 18 minutes with neither team posting a shot attempt until the Griffins recorded an on-goal shot that was saved.

Seton Hill mounted pressure as it notched the initial six shot attempts of the second half in 20 minutes. At the 76:03-mark, Miocic scored her first career goal off an assist from sophomore Ashley Venezia (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler). The Griffins were able to enter the attacking zone for scoring opportunities with a pair of corner kicks and a shot on goal, however, the Vulcans preserved the victory.

Sophomore Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) collected eight saves in 90 minutes, as she tallied her fifth shutout of the season.

Seton Hill out-shot Cal by a 15-3 margin and the Griffins also held a 11-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans close the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29, as they travel to face Edinboro in PSAC West action at 6 p.m.
