Brady Olsen (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) registered a pair of second-half goals and collected an assist on Wednesday afternoon, as the Vulcans earned a 3-0 victory at Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.
With the win, the California (PA) men's soccer team improves to 4-10-1 overall behind a 2-7 mark in league action. The Vulcans are unbeaten in 12 contests (11-0-1) against the Mountain Cats since UPJ joined the PSAC in 2013. Meanwhile, UPJ drops to 1-11-2 this season with a 0-8-1 record in divisional play.
The Mountain Cats tallied the initial shot of the contest in the third minute before the Vulcans collected four shots in a span of nine-plus minutes. Cal claimed a 1-0 lead at the 16:48-mark when senior
Evan Blunkosky (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) scored his first goal of the year, and fifth career, off an assist from Olsen. The Vulcans continued to apply pressure with three shots over the next eight minutes, including attempts by senior
Dylan Seaman (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) and Blunkosky on goal. Cal entered the break with a 1-0 lead while limiting to UPJ to three shot attempts in the first half.
The Vulcans placed a pair of shots on net in the opening five minutes of the second half before Olsen stretched the lead to 2-0 at the 50:46-mark following a double-assist by senior
Chance Pursifull (Germantown, Ohio/Valley View) and junior
Kobe Norfleet (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold). UPJ attempted to counter with three shots, including two on target, over the next six minutes. In the 66th minute, Olsen registered his second goal of the game on a rebound following a shot on net by Blunkosky. The Vulcans preserved the shutout with a 'team save' at the 70:07-mark which was the final shot attempt by the Mountain Cats in the contest. Cal continued to mount pressure in the closing minutes with four shots in the final six minutes of the game.
Junior
Payton Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Lincoln) recorded his fourth shutout of the season after making four saves on eight shot attempts. He has played all 90 minutes in a contest six times this month.
Cal totaled double-digit shots in both periods in the victory, out-shooting UPJ by a 23-8 margin. The Vulcans also finished with a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
The Vulcans close out the season on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they host Seton Hill for Senior Day at 1 p.m.
