Women’s Soccer downed by Gannon, 3-1

Galbreath scores team-leading sixth goal; Teams combine for 37 fouls

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 22) – The Vulcans suffered a 3-1 loss versus Gannon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West competition.

With the loss, the California (PA) women's soccer team drops to 5-8-2 overall with a 5-7-2 conference record. Meanwhile, the Lady Knights advance to 10-2-4 this season behind a 9-1-4 league mark.

Gannon applied early pressure as it tallied a shot attempt at the 13:07-mark before Sarah Fails scored her ninth goal this fall as she gave the Lady Knights a 1-0 lead off an assist from Gabby Boden in the 16th minute. Both teams traded field position and shot attempts over the next 15 minutes. Gannon entered the attacking zone and tallied an attempt on goal at the 33:41-mark followed by a corner kick which resulted in a header from Ella Fadale to give Lady Knights a 2-0 advantage in the 35th minute. Less than 20 seconds later, Cal answered when senior Lindsie Galbreath (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) scored on a breakaway goal and trimmed the deficit to 2-1.

Early in the second half, the Lady Knights recorded a shot that sailed right of the net and a corner kick within the initial five minutes. Gannon tallied a corner kick that resulted in a header shot from Emilie Hilliard that sailed high. Cal and the Lady Knights traded the next two shot attempts in an eight-minute span. As the second half continued, Gannon remained in the attacking zone and registered a pair of shot attempts, eventually scoring an insurance goal from Boden at the 87:39-mark. Galbreath posted a shot attempt on net in the 89th minute.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Ouimet (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) collected six saves while playing all 90 minutes on Saturday.

Gannon out-shot Cal by an 18-4 margin and the Lady Knights also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to action Wednesday, Oct. 26, as they host Seton Hill in divisional action at 6 p.m.
