Vulcans blanked by Gannon at home, 2-0

Smith notches sixth complete game this year; Teams combine for 27 fouls

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 22) – The California (PA) men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Gannon at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility on Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West matchup.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 3-10-1 this season with a 1-7 record in divisional record. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights improve to 11-3-2 overall behind a 5-1-2 mark in league play.

Senior Nehemiah Jackson (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln) had the Vulcans on the attack early as he laced an on-goal shot attempt at the 4:29-mark. The Golden Knights answered with a shot attempt that was blocked followed by a pair of corner kicks in the 13th minute. Both teams went back-and-forth in field position and shot attempts over the next nine minutes. The Golden Knights took a 1-0 lead with less than six minutes to play in the first half, as Sverre Orten scored off a feed from Charlie Petersen.

Gannon applied pressure early in the second half as it recorded four shot attempts and a corner kick in a five-minute span. Cal answered with a trip into the attacking zone and notched a corner kick followed by a header from freshman Brady Olsen (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) that sailed high of the net in the 64th minute. The Golden Knights controlled the ball and attempted a corner at the 79:04-mark followed by an on-goal shot at the 79:59-mark. Gannon stretched the lead to 2-0 with less than 20 seconds left to play.

Junior goalkeeper Payton Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Lincoln) collected three saves in 90 minutes on Saturday.

Gannon out-shot Cal by a 10-5 margin and also held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks in the contest.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 26, as they travel to face Pitt-Johnstown in conference play at 4 p.m.
