ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 15) – The California (PA) men's soccer team was unable to overcome a trio of first-half goals at No. 4 Mercyhurst, as it lost 4-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West matchup on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 3-8-1 overall and 1-5-1 in league play. Meanwhile, the Lakers remain undefeated at 13-0-1 this season with a 6-0 mark in divisional action under third-year head coach Ryan Osborne.
Mercyhurst tallied the initial shot attempt of the game at the 4:49-mark as the attempt was saved by freshman goalkeeper
AJ Visco (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). In the 19th minute, the Lakers took a 1-0 lead on a goal from Dylan Sumner. Mercyhurst tallied another goal at the 28:52-mark to take a 2-0 advantage. Cal attempted a corner kick in the 33rd minute, however, it could not result in a shot attempt. Two minutes later, Mercyhurst stretched the lead to 3-0 on a goal by Sumner, his second of the game.
The Vulcans attacked early in the second half as they tallied back-to-back shots on goal in the 57th minute. Cal posted an on-goal attempt from senior
Jake Nebinski (Ardara, Pa./Norwin) at the 64:00-mark. Senior
Nehemiah Jackson (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln) laced an shot on goal in the 78th minute, however, the attempt was saved.
Visco set a season high with six saves in 90 minutes while making his first appearance in three weeks
Mercyhurst out-shot Cal by a 15-4 margin while both teams notched two corner kicks.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19, as they travel to face Slippery Rock in PSAC West action at 1 p.m.
