Men's Soccer downed in OT by Cedarville, 2-1

Yellow Jackets score game-winning goal just 42 seconds into overtime

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 9) – The Vulcans dropped a 2-1 overtime contest against No. 19 Cedarville on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team drops to 0-2-1 this season after playing consecutive overtime games. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-0 overall after tying for first in the preseason Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) poll.

In the first half, the Vulcans struck first at the 22:04 mark when senior Negus Johnson (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) took a pass from the right side of the box from sophomore Cullin Woytovich (Charleroi, Pa/Charleroi) and placed a shot in the bottom right corner of the net to give Cal U an early 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets controlled the pace for the remainder of the half as they attempted five shots, placing two on goal.

After trading shots and corner kicks in the second half, the Yellow Jackets tied the score in the 65th minute when Eli Schmidt delivered a cross from the left side and found the foot of Sammy Kilimann, who deflected the ball in the bottom left corner of the net. Both teams combined for six more shots down the stretch of regulation before play was forced into overtime.

Just 42 seconds into the extra period, Andy Volk took a cross from Gui Fernandes and was able to beat the goalkeeper and chip the ball into the right corner of the net to secure the victory.

Junior goalkeeper Trevor Zabilowicz (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) recorded four saves on 18 shots faced while playing all 90-plus minutes of action.

The Yellow Jackets out-shot the Vulcans by an 18-5 margin with six shots on goal, plus held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 11, when they close a three-game homestand by facing Ohio Dominican, which also is a G-MAC member, with play starting at 2 p.m.
